The Aura Finnish Lutheran Church was built in May, 1930, and was dedicated the same year on July 20th. Prior to the church being built, residents used the school house or homes to gather for church services.
Mr. Isaac Holso donated the property for the church. The contractor was Herman Matero of Nisula and the building committee consisted of Isaac Holso, Charles Makela, Lauri Holso, Olga Holso, John Mytty, Charles Maki, Sofia Ahonen, Matt Koski and Louis Waisanen.
The Aura Church is a
small, quaint building sitting on a hill that overlooks Lake Superior,
beautiful woodlands and rolling farmland. During the summer months, right up to
Christmas, you can attend a service at the Aura Church each first Sunday of the month. After
the service, join us in the church dining area for some authentic ‘Finnish’
cooking and socialize with
the local community members. You
will feel right at home!
